Webinar: Rural Domestic Violence and Disability, a 21st Century Agenda

You are invited to attend the webinar “Rural Domestic Violence and Disability, a 21st Century Agenda”. The webinar will take place September, 22nd at 1:00 PM ESTand is scheduled to last 1 hour.  This invitation contains all of the information you will need to participate. A FREE certificate  of attendance will be issued to participants for submission to your licensure board for CEUs. All are invited to provide their collective wisdom in a moderated blog for improving services that will run in the weeks following the webinar. This webinar initiates an effort to eliminate rural disability-related domestic violence. We explore the following topics:
  • Access to harm prevention,
  • Recognizing the uniqueness of abuse in disabled populations,
  • Creating relevant responses to restore safety;
  • Improving social, physical and economic independence through education, mentorship, work, and civic life.
The webinar initiates a project to decrease and eliminate domestic violence and abuse of disabled individuals residing in rural settings. We examine
  • -the unique nature of rural disability-related domestic violence, including the role of dependency, caretaker frustration, poverty, exploitation, anger;
  • -forms of domestic violence that are not readily recognizable using typical screening;
  • -typical abuse experiences exacerbated by disability status;
  • -the consequences of inaccessible shelters, information, and services;
  • -legislation and service mandates;
  • -the role of negative stereotype in limiting effective help responses; and
  • -use of collaborative, creative and informed thinking and action to expand awareness, accessibility, and safety through built, social, virtual, technological and other environmental strategies.
The webinar is the first event in an ongoing collective community effort to prevent harm and restore safety and quality of life in rural New England communities and beyond. Presenters: The presenters/discussants include researchers, students, providers, and individuals with disabilities.
